Chapter 6: The Show Must Go On

Cole dropped me at my room after the dinner, like a gentleman. It was a beautiful evening and I got to know a different side of Cole that night. He talked about his family and how he grew up. He shared his idea of life and the philosophy of work. He told me about the series of incidents that happened in his life, which made him distant from this family. I also told him various things about my life and ended up sharing the kinds of things that I never told anyone in my life, not even my sister Elle.

I told him about my obsession with Charles Bukowski and how I absolutely love watching horror movies. We ate, we smiled, and we made some great memories to cherish.

“Thank you, Cole. It was such a great day and I am really grateful that you asked me to accompany you for this trip,” I passed him my gratitude and let him know how thankful I was.

“You don’t need to thank me, Stacy. The pleasure is all mine,” he said and hugged me before leaving. As I hugged him back, I felt something in me that was too hard to comprehend. I didn’t want to let go of him at all. There was a nostalgic peace and serenity that I could find in his company. It was as if Cole was in a place that I had visited before, but the marks of my journey were lost. When I hugged him, it felt as if we both have known each other from a very long time.

“Good night!” I said as he left, giving me some profound thoughts to ponder.

The next morning, I woke up by a constant and loud knock on my door. I was still in my bed, reluctant to leave it any sooner. I looked at the clock and realized that it was 7’ o clock in the morning, but to my surprise the sun was already up and shining in all of its glory. There was a strange serenity in the rays of the sun that fell on my skin and made me feel alive.

I opened the door and found Cole standing on the other side. “What happened?” I asked him, as there was a dreadful sense of expression on his face.

“I received a call from Chris’s secretary right now. He said that there was no call, no communication from our end which turned them off. They were expecting us to come last night.” He entered the room and sat on the couch. He was sweating and I figured out the gravity of the situation.

“What? What are you saying?” I said and unlocked my phone. I scrolled all my recent calls and there was no call or message from Chris’s secretary.

“There is no call or message from him, Cole,” I said and gave him my phone.

“I trust you, Stacy. I don’t need to check your phone. I don’t understand where we went wrong in this.
